Spread the Word
Family of Heroes is a 1-hour role-playing resiliency training simulation where family members learn essential skills to manage the challenges they may face in adjusting to post-deployment life. This includes managing expectations from their veteran's return, learning to identify post-deployment stress, and managing conversations with the goals of de-escalating arguments, negotiating family responsibilities, and, if needed, motivating the veteran to seek help for post-deployment stress, PTSD, or thoughts of suicide.
The learning experience is structured as an online virtual environment where users assume the roles of different family members and learn by engaging in realistic practice conversations with veteran avatars who act and respond like real veterans experiencing post-deployment stress.
This simulation is a result of a collaboration between Kognito Interactive, an award- winning developer of online role-playing training simulations and the Veterans Affairs of NY/NJ (VISN 3), which included subject matter expertise from The National Center for PTSD. In addition, over 100 family members from around the country provided feedback throughout the development.
The training is currently available online, for free, to all veteran families in NYC, Long Island, Lower Hudson Valley, and New Jersey. You can help get the word out to families by sharing the link/logo to the training on your website, newsletters, emails, publications, and other communication outlets. Below are a number of media assets to help you in this process.
Organizations outside of VISN 3 geographic area should contact Kognito to purchase a license to make the training available to families in their area. Kognito can be reached at 212-675-9234 or info@kognito.com.
